Straw

Straw is left over stubble from the farmer's paddock after the harvest of wheat or barley.  Garden mulch made from straw is generally lighter and easier to use than bark mulches, and has the added advantages of being biodegradable and neutral in ph.  It also tends to have higher moisture retention and weed control properties than other mulches.  Straw mulch is excellent ground cover because it still contains some seed, which helps prevent soil erosion on banks or recently cleared soil areas.
